Teens Only | The Best of the Best

Looking for something great to read? I thought I'd check out Goodreads to find out the most popular teen books out there right now. Not surprising, the top of the list featured Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy, followed by Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books, and then the old favorite Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling.

Following those all-stars -- and in order -- were:

Divergent by Veronica Roth, which I mentioned in an earlier blog after hearing rave reviews from some of my reader friends. This is the one about the dystopian society in which 16 year olds are forced to pick the faction to which they will devote their lives. In case you haven't read it yet, it's also available as an ebook on SSJCPL's Overdrive site.

The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. This is the story of 15-year-old Clary who gets drawn into the world of the Shadowhunters when she witnesses a murder...and the body disappears into thin air. Ok, I've got to read this one. Who doesn't love a weird murder mystery?

The Giver by Lois Lowry. This is an oldie, but a goodie. It's about a society that is uniformly run by a Committee of Elders. And then there's Jonas -- 12 years old -- whose comfortable, normal existence as a member of this well-ordered community is shaken when he is assigned his life's work as the Receiver. The Giver, who passes on to Jonas the burden of being the holder for the community of all memory, teaches him the cost of living in an environment that is without color, pain, or past.

So now you've got several great reading recommendations. And by the way, Goodreads is a cool website where you create an account and then can not only get recommendations based on books you already like, but you can also see what your friends are reading!

Enough about Twilight (yes, I just said that!) 

I'm in a YouTube kinda mood. My awesome niece Madeline just turned me on to Potter Puppet Pals on You Tube. Have you seen them? Oh. My. Goodness. Since they are based on that popular boy wizard of children's and teen literature, Harry Potter, I feel that I'm doing my librarian duty by sharing this with you. My favorite is Wizard Angst.

Teens Only | Twilight, Twilight

So I just heard that the second part of Breaking Dawn is now showing in theaters. LOL! No, I do not live under a rock. Just wanted to see if you're paying attention.

Not a day goes by at the library when we're not asked for one or a few of Stephenie Meyer's vampire/fantasy/romance novels. Just to refresh your memory, here they are in order:

Twilight: When 17-year-old Bella leaves Phoenix to live with her father in Forks, Washington, she meets an exquisitely handsome boy at school for whom she feels an overwhelming attraction and who she comes to realize is not wholly human.

New Moon: When the Cullens, including her beloved Edward, leave Forks rather than risk revealing that they are vampires, it is almost too much for 18-year-old Bella to bear, but she finds solace in her friend Jacob until he is drawn into a "cult" and changes in terrible ways.

Eclipse: Bella must choose between her friendship with Jacob, a werewolf, and her relationship with Edward, a vampire, but when Seattle is ravaged by a mysterious string of killings, the three of them need to decide whether their personal lives are more important than the well-being of an entire city. 

Breaking Dawn: In the fourth and final book vampire Twilight Saga, questions will be answered and the fate of Bella and Edward will be revealed.
