She's Crafty | Fun Mugs

I've taken my habit of doodling on everything to the next level, coffee mugs. Yes, the smooth, curved surface of a mug is no longer safe from my pen. Oil-based paint pen to be exact.

In today's post I will be talking about the craft craze known as the DIY decorated mug, or commonly known as the Sharpie mug since the most common oil-based paint pen that crafters choose to use for this project is made by the Sharpie company.

The internet is bursting with how-tos and tutorials for DIY decorated mugs. I combed craft blogs and forums for all the information I could possibly manage, digested it all and developed a plan of attack before visiting the craft store. There is a LOT of buzz about this craft and a LOT of handy tips. What I noticed right off the bat that this project can fail if you do not use the right materials. Do not be tempted into decorating a mug with an ordinary Sharpie.

She's Crafty | Trick or Treat? Here's Something Neat!

The other day I stumbled across a series of tutorials on YouTube that completely blew my mind O.O

And if you can believe, they all involved craft foam!

Craft foam: Colorful and Squishy

Craft.

Foam.

I never thought in my whole life I would ever be as excited as I am at this moment to work with craft foam. Sure it's colorful and squishy, two modes of being which I completely adore, but I haven't found much of a use for the stuff within the areas of which I'm usually crafting. Until now.

I can see it now, craft foam will completely revolutionize the way I make costume accessories. And it came to my attention just in time for the number one costuming event of the year, Halloween.

Steampunk Goggles

This story of craft foam goodness truly begins with a pair of steampunk goggles I purchased at a Halloween store. When I put them on over my short, spiky hair and looked in the mirror I immediately thought of a comic book/movie character that was popular when I was in high school known as, Tank Girl.

True story.

The next thought that came up: How can I merge these two items?

Tank Girl + Steampunk goggles = ???

"Poster girl for the Apocalypse"

With research mission in mind I jumped on the internet to find more pictures of Tank Girl to find out if I could actually come up with a costume for Halloween in time that incorporates the new goggles. I found pictures of Tank Girl wearing a flight helmet, a fur-lined aviator hat, and a combat helmet. I wanted to go for something I could actually make so I choose the aviator route instead of choosing the hardcore combat helmet.

Well, now what do I do? Do I try to find a pattern for an aviator hat online and sew one? Do I have the time? Maybe there's a video tutorial on YouTube.

Wait, from foam? 

I clicked on the video (which you can find here.) and watched with jaw dropped and eyes wide.

It has earpieces, wires and tubing?!
And looks like it's made out of leather?

My internal craft geek exploded into a billion screaming fans of incredibly, awesome things. Yes, I was that excited. I knew what I wanted to make and I was embarking into uncharted craft territory: one of my all-time favorite activities.

I downloaded the pattern from the creator of the video tutorial, LostWax. And I got to work.

So, shall I share with you how it's coming along?
Yes, I think I shall...

Here are pictures of the flight helmet pieces glued together but before paint and earpieces. 

This helmet is held together with rubber cement!

The leathery texture is made by placing a wad of scrunched up aluminum foil onto the craft foam and carefully heating it with an iron. You can watch a tutorial on how to apply this leathery texture to craft foam here. This part took a lot longer than I thought (like, forever). However, it came out so cool looking that it's worth the time and fuss. Once paint is applied you can really see the effect.

Now for the finale, some pictures of the helmet with earpieces added, buckle attached, paint applied, and a spiffy metal plate *winkwink*. I still need to add some wires and tubing, but that's about it and I'll be done and ready to pilot my very own post-apocalyptic airship!

She's Crafty | Thinking Ahead

I know it may be a bit early, but around this time of year I begin thinking about crafting a spectacular Halloween costume. Not that I go anywhere fancy or do much that day, I still like to dress up so I can hand out candy to all four of our trick-or-treaters in something other than my spiffiest set of lounge wear.

Pretty much each year I end up making something for a costume. So now I have a heap of masks; a pile of head pieces, including a feathered mini top hat; a small collection of flamboyant jewelry; and one nearly done steampunk ray gun. Pew pew.

This eclectic collection of costume accessories makes it easy to throw a quick costume together, but one day I dream of making a full head-to-toe Halloween costume. A fully lined, fully loaded, "Wow, you look just like so-and-so!" kind of costume found at comic book conventions and Renaissance fairs. I'm a master modifier but a complete newbie when it comes to making a full costume.

Whether I decide to create a single piece or a full costume this year I know the library and the internet are there to help inspire and educate me. I use tutorials found online and historical costume books like the series Dressing a Nation found at the library to keep my costume ideas going. I will even consult YouTube for makeup tutorials, on which you will never encounter a shortage of Halloween makeup tutorials.

One year I even learned a new needle craft by following a tutorial on the website known as Instructables. I was looking for a new mask and came across a tutorial for a tatted mask, written by an instructor who goes by TotusMel. The mask was lacy and beautiful, and I had to do whatever I could to make one, which meant learning how to tat. I checked out books on tatting from the library, I found other tutorials by TotusMel and on other websites, and after learning the basics I tackled the big project. Her tutorial was great and by the end of the whole process not only did I have an incredibly cool mask but I also learned how to tat!

I have some grand costume plans floating around in the ol' brain box just begging to be made and a lot of stuff in my costume bag o' tricks to play with but if I make something new or encounter a new trick to add to my bag, I'll keep you informed.

I'm in a YouTube kinda mood. My awesome niece Madeline just turned me on to Potter Puppet Pals on You Tube. Have you seen them? Oh. My. Goodness. Since they are based on that popular boy wizard of children's and teen literature, Harry Potter, I feel that I'm doing my librarian duty by sharing this with you. My favorite is Wizard Angst.
